Floods

Floods occur in various parts of the island due to heavy rains during different seasons of the year. Although floods occur as the result of a natural phenomenon, human actions too affect the occurrence of floods, to a great extent.

 Some human actions that causes floods 

• Clearing hill slopes.
• Putting up unauthorized constructions on rivers banks.
• Removing sand from rivers.
• Reclaiming marshy lands.

Action that should be taken to minimize the damage caused by floods

• Keeping away from flowing water and moving to secure places.
• Refraining from walking through, or travelling in vehicles, in areas affected by floods.
• Avoiding electric poles and electric cables that have fallen on the ground.
• Refraining from consuming food items affected by floods.
• Avoiding using water,in the area affected by floods,for drinking and cooking purposes.
