You may have heard through the media that due to motor accidents that occur daily in Sri Lanka , a large number of lives are lost and equally large number sustain serious injuries. Due to motor accidents the society loses useful lives.

People who have left home for their jobs, for education purposes, and various other requirements would have been subject to such accidents on the highway. Hence it is very important that we focus our attention on the prevention of motor accidents. The causes for motor accidents can be grouped basically under the following heads:
- Offences caused by drivers.
- Carelessness of pedestrians.
- Shortcomings in the road systems.
The above are the most common causes of motor accidents.
- When using pesticides reading and thorough understanding of the instructions on the label and proper observance of this instructions.
- Storing the packs and bottles containing pesticides and chemicals so as to make their labels visible.
- Storing them in places out of reach by children.
- Dilution according to the specified instructions.
- Wearing gloves, headgear, shoes, masks etc. as per instructions, when spraying or using agro- chemicals.
- Purchasing only the required quantity.
- Avoiding keeping unnecessary chemicals at home.
- Refraining from dumping empty bottles and such items into reservoirs, streams and the environment so as to be harmful.

Today we often hear of incidents such as bomb blasts in public places where people haunt, and in buses. Such incidents often take a huge toll of human lives. Moreover, a large number of people become handicapped.
Some courses of action we as citizens can take, in avoid such situations are given below:
- Be vigilant about suspicious parcels and items such as baggage.
- Immediately after spotting such an item warn the others in its vicinity about it.
- Inform the security personnel. (Telephone numbers 118 or 119)
- Evacuate the place as soon as possible.
