 Tsunami


The strong spell of waves that results from an earthquake that within the ocean- bed, is called a Tidal Wave [of Tsunami type]. These giant ocean waves, move in to all quarters from the point of their origin. They cause immense damage to coastal areas.
Owing to the Tsunami [Tidal Wave] catastrophe that spread to Sri Lanka on 26th December 2004, thousands of lives were lost. This can be termed as the worst ever disaster that occurred in recent times. Among the death toll on account of this disaster were the permanent dwellers in the coastal strip of the island, those who travelled by motor cars, train and bus passengers and fisher folk. Vast damage was caused to various types of property such as houses, tourist hotels, fishing boats and vehicles. This catastrophe affected India,Indonesia and Thailand too.


Course of action that can be taken to miniseries the damage caused by a tidal wave [Tsunami]


  • Paying attention to the weather forecasts broadcast/ telecast by communication media.
  • If their is danger behavior evacuate such areas.
  • Be alert to the symptoms of tidal wave. eg. The movement of sea- water inside and the appearance of sand bars on the beach. The appearance of fish in the dried up area.
  • Since waves can reappear soon after, be concerned about it. 
  • Immediately move to a place of high elevation.
  • Make every possible attempt to move to a safe place since tidal waves move quickly.

  • Create awareness in others about such a disaster.
